Billionaire SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has officially announced the creation of a new political group in the United States — the ‘America Party‘. The news comes after a social media poll on Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter), where most users voted to create a new political party.

The survey, done on July 4, coinciding with the United States Independence Day, asked whether Americans needed a new party. The verdict was that 65.4% said “Yes”, while 34.6% said “No”. Musk categorized this as a public mandate.

“By a ratio of 2 to 1, you desire a new political party and you will have one! Today, the America Party is established to restore your freedom,” Musk said on Saturday.

During his announcement, Musk also criticized the two-party system that currently exists, deeming it inefficient and representative. According to him, the America Party would deal with restoring freedom and government wastage.

He describes a strategic, pragmatic entry for the party into politics by targeting a few select contests rather than widespread ones.

Musk suggested that the party should “laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts”, rather than mounting candidates in every state. He believes this limited focus will allow the America Party to become the swing vote in a closely divided U.S. Congress, thus optimizing its influence while not overstretching its resources.
